3 days in Piraeus

With a three-day holiday trip to Piraeus, you will have the opportunity not only to admire the sights, but to become part of the city's life and feel the special atmosphere that it exudes thanks to its long history and its multicultural identity.

Day 1

What to see:

  • The Maritime Museum of Greece, located at the entrance of the Zea Marina. Through its exhibits you will learn about the maritime tradition of Piraeus and Greece.
  • The Municipal Theatre of Piraeus. It is a landmark of Piraeus and its internal layout follows the models of the Theatre d'Odeon in Paris. It was renovated and reopened in October 2013. Since then, visitors have enjoyed theatre plays, concerts, exhibitions, events, dance performances and much more.

What to do:

  • Stroll through the pedestrian streets and squares of the centre for your shopping.
  • Ride in Piraeus to the picturesque bay of Aphrodite. On the rocks you will admire the remains of the Kononeion wall.

Food, coffee, drink. 
In the city centre you will find all-day restaurants-cafes with courtyards and tables in the pedestrian streets and squares.
Sit in one of the taverns of Piraiki, or in the ouzeri and traditional taverns in the area of the Naval Cadet School.


Day 2 

What to see:

  • The Archaeological Museum of Piraeus. Through its exhibits you will learn a lot about the history of the city which in ancient times flourished as a commercial centre of the Eastern Mediterranean and a naval station of ancient Athens. In the courtyard is the Zeus Theatre.
  • The Municipal Gallery of Piraeus. Its rich collection includes 837 paintings by well-known modern Greek painters and younger artists.
  • The Lion of Piraeus, gazing at the port from the Xaverion Coast.

What to do:

  • A trip to the Zea Marina and Pasalimani (Zea Beach), one of the ancient naval stations of Piraeus and its second largest port. Breathe in the sea air and get into the atmosphere of the city's daily life.
  • At Alexandra Square you can stop to admire the modern monument dedicated to the Pontian Genocide.
     

Food, coffee, drink:
For brunch, lunch or dinner choose Pasalimani, or the neighborhood of Trouba. 
For coffee and drinks you can go to the Zea Marina.

Day 3

What to see:

  • The Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation and the Nelson Collection with personal items, dozens of letters and documents related to the English Admiral Horatio Nelson.
  • The churches of Agios Nikolaos, Agia Triada and Agios Spyridon. Besides being places of worship, they have excellent architecture and hagiographies.
  • The galleries in the former industrial area of Agios Dionysios-Papastratio.

What to do:

  • Tour of Castella. It is one of the most charming districts of Piraeus, adorned with neoclassical houses and mansions of the 19th and early 20th century, many of which have been renovated. High from the top of Prophet Elias Hill, the view of Piraeus, the Saronic Gulf and the Attica coastline is impressive.
  • Below Kastella is Mikrolimano, the famous picturesque harbour of Piraeus that reminds of an island. It is ideal for a leisurely stroll by the sea with its piers and moored boats.

Food, coffee, drink.
For coffee, dinner and drinks you can go to Mikrolimano. Its restaurants have been frequented for years by lovers of fine food - especially those who love fresh fish and seafood. The nightlife lasts until late at night.
