A Walk in Mikrolimano
Even if you come to Piraeus for just a few hours, you'll definitely visit Mikrolimano. It's a destination in itself, an ideal spot for Instagram photos. It's a cosmopolitan "ambassador" of Piraeus throughout Greece and abroad.
The image of the small harbor with moored vessels and fishing boats will captivate you from the moment you see it from above, especially at sunset when the lights come on, and the horizon is painted in shades of orange and purple. You can descend from Nafarchou Votsi Street and walk along the coastline to the Hellenic Offshore Sailing Club. Thanks to the city's works, completed in the summer of 2022, the beautiful harbor, reminiscent of an island, became even more visitor-friendly. It's an ideal walking spot for everyone - safe and suitable for families with young children since cars don't circulate in this area.
You'll walk on a wide promenade with modern lighting and benches for resting. When you want to stop for a coffee or a meal, just choose one of the establishments with shady terraces lined up one after another. Or grab a coffee to-go and find one of the piers with moored vessels to sit and admire the illuminated Mikrolimano and the open horizon.
Across from the esplanade, by crossing the lightly-trafficked road, you can step into a different time... a journey back in history. A walk through the neighborhoods with their steps, houses with tile roofs, and yards with potted plants, built for refugees in 1930, will transport you to the past. Among them, you'll notice interesting examples of folk architecture - houses with ornate wrought-iron gates, wind chimes, and decorative lions. Don't expect uniformity. Each house, whether renovated or not, is different. Every human story here hides sorrows, poverty, and hardships - in contrast to the grand mansions of Kastella, which ascend the Prophet Elias hill. The people sitting on their doorsteps will greet you with a "good morning." If you're in the mood, listen to their narratives. This way, you'll dive beneath the surface of a simple tourist stroll and better understand how this unique, multicultural city-port called Piraeus came into being!
