On the Themistocleous Coast to the Bay of Aphrodite and Freattis
In Piraiki
Overview
Wonderful sunsets, exquisite flavors, unique sea views, the touch of the ancient history of the city that reaches back to the time of Themistocles and Conon, emblematic neoclassical buildings, an organized beach for swimming: Everything unfolds in the 2.5 km of this route along the Piraeus Peninsula, next to the water.
Shall we walk it?
If you are coming from where the cruise ships dock, you can easily find the Hadjikyriakeio from Akti Miaouli, at 18 Kleisovis Street (otherwise you can start the walk from this point). The Hadjikyriakeio Children's Foundation has been classified by the Ministry of Culture as a "Work of Art and Historical Monument of Conservation". The second landmark is the Naval Cadet School (48 Chatzikyriakou Street). It is worth admiring the exterior of the building with its neoclassical features signed by the famous German architect Ernst Ziller. Piraeus residents and visitors who have been "introduced" to the flavours of Piraeus have for years been hanging out in some of the many fish taverns and ouzerias near the Naval Cadet School and Chatzikyriakou Avenue. Stop by for fresh seafood, fish and appetizers. Otherwise, set sail for Piraeus, where you have many more choices.
From Georgiou Theotoki Street, you will exit to Akti Themistokleous (Piraeus) and you will have a constant view of the sea, while the fresh breeze will accompany your every step. It is one of the most beautiful places to walk - and even more beautiful at sunset. In several places, on the rocks of the coast, you will even see the remains of the 4th century BC Kononeion wall that protected the ports of Piraeus in ancient times.
All along Piraiki there are traditional restaurants serving Greek cuisine, fish taverns, ouzeri and cafes - quite a few of which have tables outside.
The walk will bring you to the picturesque Ormos of Aphrodite (or Baikoutsi) with the imposing Cross and the "island" chapel of Agios Nikolaos. Continuing on the Akti Themistokleous you will reach Freattyda where there is an organized beach. Time for diving!
The continuation of this walk leads to the marina of Zeus, in Passalimani (see Walk 1).
