The Peace and Friendship Stadium (S.E.F.)
The Peace and Friendship Stadium (S.E.F.)
"What is this?" As your vehicle rolls down Ethnarhou Makariou Avenue, the unusual, cavernous shape of the large roof of the Peace and Friendship Stadium comes into view against the backdrop of the sea. Look. It almost looks...flexible. If you've never seen it before, you'll surely have many questions!
So, let's provide some answers.
When and how was it constructed? The multi-purpose indoor stadium was built between 1981-1984, based on the designs by the architectural firm "Thymios Papagiannis and Associates." Its architecture, modern equipment, and the events held there kept it relevant for many years. The stadium has a capacity ranging from 10,520 to 11,390 spectators, depending on the events. It is surrounded by open spaces for sports, recreation, and culture. To the east lies the Marina of Athens.
Has it received any awards? Of course. In 1991, it received a Gold Award at the international competition for the construction of indoor stadiums and sports facilities organized by the IAKS (International Working Group for the Construction of Sports and Leisure Facilities).
What kind of events have been hosted here? Sporting events, concerts, commercial and professional exhibitions, ice skating rinks - even supercross races have taken place here.
What were the most significant moments in its history? The S.E.F. was inaugurated in 1985 by the then-Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou. It has hosted 11 Greek Cup Finals in basketball. Notable events include the 1985 European Champions Cup Final, the 1987 EuroBasket, the 1989 European Cup Winners' Cup Final, and the 1998 FIBA World Championship. Between 1988 and 2005, it also hosted World and European championships and Cups in volleyball, wrestling, weightlifting, rhythmic gymnastics, and artistic gymnastics.
Why do Greeks still remember the 1987 EuroBasket at S.E.F.? Because on June 14 of that year, heroic pages of Greek basketball and sports history were written there. The national team, featuring players who became legends - including Galis, Giannakis, Fasoulas, and Christodoulou - won the final against the Soviet Union with a score of 103-101 after a breathtaking match filled with suspense. The result was celebrated with magnificent festivities all over Greece, raising national spirits. Since then, thousands of children started learning basketball. It was Greece's greatest triumph until 2004 when the national football team won the European Championship.
